How to Slay the Weight Loss Negativity Dragon

By Ayotunde Adeyeri, MD, FASMBS, Medical Director, Sterling Surgicare

Even the most motivated ‘bariatric warriors’ will face setbacks along the journey.

These challenges may even make you question why you chose to undergo weight loss surgery.

Negative thoughts or doubts are perfect fodder for the ‘negativity dragon’ to break out of its cage and rear its ugly head.

So be ready, because we all have to battle ‘the dark side’ now and then.

Bariatric patients tell us these are some of their most common doubt-laden thoughts:

This was a crazy idea—it’s not going to work for you.”

“You have too much weight to lose.”

“You don’t have the guts to do this.”

Let me be the first to say that none of these statements are accurate. You are empowered to lose weight and cannot be stopped.

When negative thoughts surface, try these tools to banish them:

Look forward—not back

It’s a new day. What happened before is over and done. The future is bright and healthy. You will not go back to the ‘way things were’ because that didn’t work.

Celebrate small victories

It’s important to have long-term goals, but don’t forget to acknowledge little successes. They feed your motivation. Missed the gym twice in a row? Pat yourself on the back because you stayed on program and the scale did not move upward. Recognizing even small milestones will help keep you feeling positive–and in control.

Flip that negative to a positive

Don’t beat yourself up if you overindulge or skip a workout. It’s okay to slip up once in a while ─ we all do it. If you splurged–own it—and get back on track immediately (don’t wait for tomorrow morning!).

Surround yourself with people who support you

You are engaged in the fight of your life, so it is essential to surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you succeed, feel healthy and be around for many years to come. Some people around you may be troubled by your transformation, but this is not within your power to change.

As you lose weight, be prepared for some doubt and negative feelings now and then—it’s completely normal. If you believe in yourself and stay focused, negativity will have no opportunity to break through your resolve.

You are going to win this and nothing is going to stop you.
