Finishing 2025 Strong: Four Small Habits That Create Big Wins

By Ayotunde Adeyeri, MD, FASMBS
Medical Director, Sterling Surgicare

As we enter the final weeks of 2025, I’ve been reflecting on the habits that help us feel healthier, calmer and more purposeful—especially during the holiday season and the rush to the end of the year.
I decided to set four simple goals for myself, not only to finish the year feeling accomplished, but to model the same sustainable habits I encourage my bariatric patients to embrace.
Sharing these goals publicly adds personal accountability—and hopefully inspires someone else to join me.
Walk 10 Extra Minutes a Day

Movement remains one of the most powerful tools for long-term weight control, cardiovascular health and stress reduction. You don’t need a gym membership or a perfect routine to benefit. Adding just 10 extra minutes of walking each day can improve circulation, boost mood and help stabilize blood sugar—key factors for anyone on a weight-loss or weight-maintenance journey.
Enjoy One Fully Plant-Based Meal at Least Three Days a Week

Research consistently shows the benefits of adding more fiber-rich, plant-based foods to support digestion, heart health and satiety. For bariatric patients, plant-forward meals can help maintain stable energy, reduce inflammation and support a healthy gut microbiome. My goal is simple and realistic—three plant-based meals each week, chosen intentionally.
Set Aside 15 Minutes of Device-Free Quiet Time Every Night
Sleep hygiene is foundational to weight management, hormone regulation and mental clarity. By intentionally stepping away from devices for at least 15 minutes before bed, I’m giving my brain a chance to reset and allowing my nervous system to shift into a calmer, more restorative state. This small habit improves sleep quality—and helps me show up better for my patients, family and myself.
Express Gratitude to Two People Every Day

Social connection is a critical part of overall health. Gratitude strengthens relationships, reduces stress hormones and supports emotional resilience. My goal is to deliberately thank at least two people each day—staff members, patients, family or friends. These small moments of acknowledgment create a ripple effect of positivity.
Why Small Goals Matter
As a bariatric surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand how sustainable change comes from steady, manageable actions—not drastic overhauls. These four end-of-year goals are simple, realistic and designed to build momentum going into 2026.
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to finish the year strong, consider choosing one or two habits of your own. Small steps lead to long-term success.
